Format: Each journal entry should have the title, author, and pages read on one line. Go to the next line and thoroughly answer any of the following prompts. Students must have 5 different responses for each week. Be sure to elaborate, or explain your answer.
1. Give at least 3 examples of where your book surprised you or drew you into reading
2. Why do you think the author chose the title for this book? Do you think it was a wise choice? Explain.
3. Pick one character and give that character advice at any point in the story. Defend why you think you gave good advice. Do you think the character would accept you advice? Why or why not?
4. List and explain any symbols in the book.
5. In a short paragraph, predict what will happen next in the book.
6. In a short paragraph, briefly explain how the book would be different if the main character was a different gender.
7. In what point-of view is the story told? Would the story be different if it were told from another point-of-view?
8. What is the theme of the story? Briefly explain why you think so.
9. If the book had a soundtrack, what songs would be on it? Why?
10. In a short paragraph, briefly explain the conflict in the story.
11. Copy a quotation from the book and comment on it.
12. Compare the characters in the book to people you know.
13. Are the characters believable? Why or why not?
14. Create a timeline of important events in the story.
15. Describe the setting (time and place).
16. How does the author create suspense?
17. What do you know now that you didn't know before?
18. What questions about this book would you like answered?
19. Would you like to acquire a personality trait of a particular character? What is the trait and why do you like it?
20. Write a brief summary of the pages you just read.
21. Find a word in the text for which you didn't know what it meant. Copy the sentence that contains the word. Explain how you can figure out what it means.
